Program Eligibility

You must meet all of these requirements to be eligible for this program.

APPLY TODAY IF YOU:

  • Are proficient in English
  • Have a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and at least one year of prior related work experience in your occupational field outside the United States OR
  • Have five years of work experience outside the United States in the occupational field in which you are seeking training. If you are currently enrolled in a foreign post-secondary academic institution or within one year of graduation and not eligible for the Practical Training USA, you may be eligible for Intern USA, where you can intern in the U.S. for up to 12 months. 
  • Sufficient funds to cover miscellaneous expenses until you receive your first stipend (US$2500 - US$3000).
  • The intent to pursue, as a career, the field in which the training will take place or a similar field.
  • Have a training position already arranged; or eligible and pre-screened for a Direct Placement Opportunity.

Trainees may return to the US for additional training if they meet the selection requirements and have been absent from the United States for no less than two years after the completion of their initial training program.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted year-round

  1. Submit a copy of your resume to determine if you meet the minimum requirements set forth by the State Department. CCUSA will also determine if your education and experience is a good match for the Employer offering the training plan and that the training will complement your education and experience.
  2. Have your employer submit a training plan to our office in the USA for approval.
  3. Once you and your employer get the go ahead from CCUSA click on the APPLY Button at the top of this page. Then either log in (if you already have an account) or create one - choose your desired program as Practical Training USA
    • Sign the Program Agreement
    • Complete and return all the documents with payment as outlined on the application center.
  4. We will arrange a face to face interview. This step helps us learn more about you and allows you to find out more about the program.
  5. If your training program is approved and you are accepted to the program, you will be required to review and sign the DS 7002 form.
  6. Once your signature is received, CCUSA will issue your sponsorship form (DS 2019 Form).
  7. We will assist in booking your US Consulate Interview. You will need to complete additional forms as well as pay for the visa issuing fees prior to attending your interview at the Consulate.

Please allow at least two months for application processing.

Visa

Depending on the training program, you will be eligible for up to an 18-month J-1 Visa, although you can do shorter programs as well. On this visa you can only train with the approved host company, and you are required to follow the training guide that was set up by that company.

As a trainee, you cannot work in unskilled or casual labor positions, in positions that require or involve childcare or elder care or in any kind of position that involves medical patient care or contact.  Nor can you train in positions that require more than 20 percent clerical or office support work. Use of the Exchange Visitor Program for ordinary employment or work purposes is strictly prohibited.  Trainees cannot be placed in positions which are filled or would be filled by full-time or part-time employees.  Also, your training cannot duplicate your prior work experience or training.  Positions such as the following will not qualify for the program
