What is Camp Counselors Russia

Since 1990, CCUSA has been offering the Camp Counselor Russia program. The Camp Counselors Russia program is an adventurous, unique opportunity for those who want to work with children while immersing themselves in the Russian culture. Explore Russia, make new friends and impact the lives of children.

The Camp Counselor Role

Working in a Russian Summer Camp

Camp Types

Russian camps have their own traditions and philosophies, but they all provide children a safe place to learn new skills, have fun and make new friends in an outdoor setting. Russian camps are usually located in the countryside, often by a lake or river. Typical activities include theater, land sports, water sports, arts & crafts, dance, and performing arts. Children come for sessions lasting 2 to 4 weeks.

Skills

You do not need to be an expert in any one activity or skill to work at a camp in Russia. The skills and knowledge you already have doing activities in a team, through your school/university or socially with friends are enough to teach at camp If you have skills or prior experience in land sports, arts, drama and/or outdoor adventures, then you are qualified.

What to Expect

Life as a camp counselor in Russia is not an easy job. The hours are long and campers will keep you busy around the clock. You will lead activites for the campers, eat with them and possibly share living accommodations with them. You will be required to adapt to unfamiliar customs, traditions, and lifestyles. You may experience some culture shock and physical stress due to changes in diet, climate and schedule, so it’s important to be flexible!

Camp Counselor

As a camp counselor, you will be a teacher, leader and friend to a group of children between the ages of 7 and 17.  You will spend most of your days outside doing a variety of different jobs, which will make each day a new adventure. You will be expected to share your culture and traditions with the Russian children and other counselors on staff.  You will assist in teaching English to campers.   This is typically done in either a more formal, classroom setting or informal setting through activities such as reading, songs, sports, and games.  You will also lead activities, sports games and help campers in a variety of arts and craft projects.
