Before You Go

Employment is normally for a minimum of 4 months, but longer placements can be arranged with the pubs owner and in many cases are preferred. Once you’ve finished your initial three months placement, it is up to you and your employer to work out your arrangements. Many people stay for longer and some even head off to travel and then come back for another stint. Or talk to our program partners UK office to discuss other options. The choice is yours!

No. On the job training is provided for you. This is one reason there is a minimum 4 months required, as the pubs train you for the first few weeks of your placement.

Typically you will not find out until 5-7 days prior to starting. This is because jobs become available in cycles and current employees normally only give a few weeks notice when they have finished their time working for the pub. If you are travelling first before starting your job, simply provide us with an email address so we can keep in contact with you and offer you jobs via email.

Yes! There are many programs you can participate in prior to arrival in the UK, including Camp Counselors USA, Camp Counselors Canada, or Camp Counselors Russia. Just be sure to apply at least 6 – 8 weeks before you leave Australia as you will need to apply for your visa before you leave. We will also need your arrival date in the UK. Our program partner will sort it out the rest from there. Also, if you are on one of our other programs, we can use your online application form for this program, so there’s no need to fill in 2 applications!

Lots of people do other programs, tours and traveling before arriving in the UK and wanting to start work. This is not a problem – you just need to put the date that you wish to start working on your application form. If you are already overseas when your placement comes through we just need to have an email address we can contact you to confirm the position. Easy!

We recommend that you give us a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks notice to find work for you; however, the longer we have your application the more employers are going to see it.

With over 500 pubs throughout England, we are sure to find a match for you. If for any reason we are not able to place you, we will give you your money back.

On the Job

The great thing about these positions is that you are able to experience all aspects of a UK pub - including behind the bar, stock rotation, food service, kitchen-hand and customer service. The focus of your position depends very much on the type of pub you are placed in. Hours also vary depending on the pub and location. Most traditional pubs open at 11am and close at 11pm, but the inner-city/night club venues are more likely to remain open until later hours. Hours will be rostered for all staff upon arrival.

There are several different styles of pub available, which you will get more information on during the interview. These vary from traditional pubs in London, lively central city, large and small establishments, city or country living. Let us know what suits you best.

All pubs are in England - some are centrally located in London while others are in other major cities or in country towns.

Your gross weekly income will average £200.00 or more per week (after all taxes and other deductions a net income of £150 to £180) for a 39-45 hour per week. You will receive normal rostered days off which will allow you plenty of time to see the sites.

Accommodation will always be provided with the job. Every pub will have individual arrangements for accommodation and most will be very basic. You might be living on the premises (in the pub) or in a nearby apartment or share house. All pubs are screened to make sure that you have access to kitchen facilities and your room is clean and comfortable. It is rare that you would be in a single room, but usually you only have to share with one other person. Couples generally have their own room to share. Many of the breweries also include a meal a day as part of the job offer. Confirmation of these details will be provided upon placement. In addition, kitchen and clothes washing facilities may be available.

Once you arrive in London, you will be directed to the pub on your day of arrival, but not expected to start work for at least two days, to recover from the jetlag. All details including full directions to the pub, information from the airport, location, manager’s contact names and phone numbers, and what is included with your position will be provided prior to your arrival.

Every effort will be made to place people in the same pub. Whilst we are usually successful in doing this, we cannot guarantee it. At the very least we will endeavour to place people travelling together in nearby pubs. We would recommend that you give us additional time with your application to assist in placing you together. If you are travelling in a group of more than two people we suggest that you look at working at different pubs, as this will give you a better chance of getting your time off together.
