Do I need a visa?

You must apply for a visa either under the Youth Mobility (Tier 5) Scheme or an Ancestral Visa, or you must obtain an EU passport to legally work in the UK. This must be obtained before you leave home. You should apply for the appropriate visa with the British High Commission in Australia. Youth Mobility visas cannot be obtained once you are in the UK. Our program partner are able to assist you (at no extra cost) in the process of sorting your visa.

Please note that the requirements for UK working visas changed in November 2008
The two main visas used by our applicants are the Youth Mobility (Tier 5) visa and the Ancestral visa. The British Government have a different approach to each of these visas.

  • The Youth Mobility visa is offered to citizens of Australia, New Zealand and Canada and is viewed as an offer, but not as a right.
  • The Ancestral visa is seen differently by the British Government as you have the right to apply by having a parent or grandparent born in the UK.

The rules for obtaining a Youth Mobility (Tier 5) visa are precise. If any mistake is made with the visa application, the British High Commission will automatically reject the application, leaving you with little ability to appeal. We therefore strongly recommend you apply today. Once on the program our program partner will assist you with your visa application to ensure you comply with all visa requirements.

To be eligible for an Ancestral visa, a parent or grandparent has to have been born in the UK. You will need to provide details of all their birth certificates and marriage certificates (for both parents and grandparents).
If you apply and are eligible for either visa, you can request a letter addressed to The British High Commission from our program partner to confirm you will receive a job placement prior to your arrival into the UK.
Please allow plenty of time when applying for your visa, as the British High Commission are busy all year round.
